Step 1 of 4, identify

Which miss is costing you?

Strike Wedge is an external tool, designed to be avoided. Identify your miss, and we'll show you how to train it.

Placements are shown for a right-handed golfer. Strike Wedge is symmetrical, so left-handers mirror each one.

Fat shots

Identify

How to tell

The club hits the ground before the ball. On grass, the divot starts behind the ball. On a mat, you can sometimes hit the ground first and not notice.

What is happening

Two main reasons you hit it fat. Your low point (the bottom of your swing arc) is behind the ball, or your arc height is too low. Either way, the club meets the ground too early. You lose a lot of distance as a result.

Train

Strike Wedge set up for fat shots: behind the ball, with the wall attachment/ruler beside it showing the distance.
Position
Behind the ball
Distance
2-4 inches for wedges. 4.5-6 inches for 9-iron and above
Attachment
None

Make a swing and miss it. Bottom out early and you'll hit the Strike Wedge.

Measure

In Strike Wedge Launch App, look for:

  • Consistent Carry Distances
  • Consistent Launch Angle
  • Consistent Ball Speed

Compete

Once you've developed your skills, compete in Daily Challenge in Strike Wedge Launch: one distance, three shots, a leaderboard every day.

Heel strikes and shanks

Identify

How to tell

Check where the ball comes off the face, hit enough shots to gather good data. Heel strikes bunch towards the hosel; take that miss to its extreme and you have the shank.

What is happening

A shank is a strike location problem. The ball is meeting the face about an inch (25 mm) from the centre, and you don't always need a swing rebuild to close that gap.

Train

Position
Outside the ball
Distance
The wall sits just outside the toe at address.
Attachment
Wall attachment, on the side of Strike Wedge

Hit the ball, miss the wall. The strike will move away from the heel.

Measure

In the Strike Wedge Launch App, look for:

  • Consistent Carry Distance
  • More Accuracy
  • Consistent Ball Speed

Compete

When your skill level improves, take it into the Daily Challenge in Strike Wedge Launch: one distance, three shots, a leaderboard every day.

Toe strikes

Identify

How to tell

Check where the ball comes off the face, shot after shot. Toe strikes bunch out at the far end of the face, and your shots will often come up short.

What is happening

The ball is meeting the face off centre, out towards the toe. Off-centre contact deflects the face at impact, so as well as coming up short, you can lose accuracy.

Train

Strike Wedge with the wall attachment/ruler standing at its back, set on the inside of the ball beside the heel of the club
Position
Inside the ball
Distance
Nearly touching the heel of the club at address.
Attachment
Wall on the back

Avoid it and the strike moves away from the toe, back towards the middle.

Measure

In Strike Wedge Launch, look for:

  • Consistent Carry Distance
  • More Accuracy
  • Consistent Ball Speed

Compete

When your skill improves, get involved in the Daily Challenge in Strike Wedge Launch: one distance, three shots, a leaderboard every day.

Slice

Identify

How to tell

The ball curves from left to right in the air. (for a right hander)

What is happening

Your path (the direction the club travels through impact) travels left of where the face points, out to in, so the ball curves right. The curve comes from the gap between face and path.

Train

Strike Wedge set up for a slice: behind the ball on the outside, angled slightly right.
Position
Outside the ball, angled slightly right of the target
Distance
About 8 inches (20 cm) behind the ball
Attachment
Wall attachment, on the side of Strike Wedge

It blocks the out-to-in path. The angle is the instruction. Left-handers mirror it.

Measure

Strike Wedge Launch reads the strike, not the curve. Look for:

  • Consistent Ball Speed
  • Better Accuracy
  • Consistent Carry Distance

When your skill improves, get involved in the Daily Challenge in Strike Wedge Launch: one distance, three shots, a leaderboard every day.

Hook

Identify

How to tell

The ball curves from right to left in the air. (for a right hander)

What is happening

Your path (the direction the club travels through impact) travels right of where the face points, in to out, so the ball curves left. The curve comes from the gap between face and path.

Train

Strike Wedge set up for a hook: the wall attachment/ruler on the back, behind the ball on the inside.
Position
Inside the ball, angled slightly left of the target
Distance
About 8 inches (20 cm) behind the ball
Attachment
Wall attachment on the back

It sits where an in-to-out path wants to go. Left-handers mirror it.

Measure

Strike Wedge Launch reads the strike, not the curve. Look for:

  • Consistent Ball Speed
  • Consistent Carry Distance
  • Consistent Launch Angle

Compete

When it holds up, take it into the Daily Challenge in Strike Wedge Launch: one distance, three shots, a leaderboard every day.

Driver

Identify

How to tell

The ball flight gives it away: a low launch, too much spin and not enough carry. On a launch monitor that reads attack angle (whether the club is travelling up or down at impact), your driver shows a negative number: the club is travelling down when it meets the ball.

What is happening

The driver is moving down at the point of impact. At most club head speeds, this is not optimal, as it doesn't produce the necessary launch and spin to hit the ball a long way. Hitting slightly up is preferable at most speeds.

Train

Strike Wedge set up for the driver: in front of the teed ball.
Position
In front of the ball, on the target side
Distance
4-6 Inches in front
Attachment
None

A club moving down at the point of impact will hit the Strike Wedge. Avoid the Strike Wedge and you'll start to achieve an upward attack angle.

Measure

Strike Wedge Launch is for shots inside 150 yards, so here Strike Wedge is the measure:

  • You miss it cleanly, shot after shot
  • Launch goes up, spin comes down
  • Carry distance increases

Compete

Carry it to the first tee, then test your wedges in the Daily Challenge in Strike Wedge Launch.

Simon Dyson

In a tour winner’s words

If you ever want to change a movement pattern, put an obstacle in the way and let your body figure it out. I do everything on ball flight, nothing technical. I get so many players who hang back and come in shallow. I put the Strike Wedge down and all of a sudden they're moving onto the left side, delivering it properly and getting the ball flight. It's the one training aid that goes everywhere with me, and I mean everywhere.
